Be able to, se traduce literalmente por 'ser capaz de', tiene un significado vecino de can (o could en el pasado):

 

Be able to también permite expresar can en diferentes tiempos en el pasado y en el futuro:

 

 

Presente:

1. I am able to slam those doors (Soy capaz de tirar la puerta)
2. She is able to sing very well (Ella es capaz de cantar muy bien)
3. You are able to kill that ant (Eres capaz de matar esa hormiga)

 

 

Pasado:

1. I was able to do my work (Yo fui capaz de hacer mi trabajo)
2. They were able to clean the classroom(Ellos pudieron limpiar el aula)
3. She was able to go dancing last saturday (Ella pudo ir a bailar el sábado pasado)

 

Futuro:

1. We will be able to build a house (Serás capaz de construir una casa)
2. Pedro will be able to ride a horse(Serás capaz de cabalgar un caballo)
3. I will be able to dance (Podrás bailar)

 

Negativo

  

I'm not able to move my leg.
= I can't move my leg. No puedo mover la pierna.

Sin embargo, can se usa principalmente para expresar las capacidades o aptitudes adquiridas con el tiempo, mientras que be able to hace referencia a capacidades o incapacidades temporales o puntuales:

He can't swim. Él no sabe nadar.

He's not able to swim. Él no puede nadar. (Hay algo que se lo impide temporalmente)
